Pavol Grecula / The Dionýz Štúr State Geological
Institute (ŠGÚDŠ)
60 YEARS OF THE DIONÝZ ŠTÚR STATE GEOLOGICAL INSTITUTE In May 2000, the employees of the Dionýz Štúr State Geological Institute commemorated the origination of the first organised professional geological organisation in Slovakia. Till 1938 there was no geological research institute in Slovakia. The independent State Geological Institute in Slovakia was established in 1940. In 1947 it was renamed into the Slovak Central Institute of Geology and became the branch of the Central Institute of Geology in Prague. In 1952 the Geological Fund was established. In 1953 the name of the institute was changed into the Dionýz Štúr Geological Institute (Dionýz Štúr was the outstanding Slovak geologist living in the 19th century) and in 1965 it became officially the independent institute for the basic geological research in Slovakia. In 1968 the Slovak Geological Office was established and the Dionýz Štúr Geological Institute was incorporated in it. It has changed in 1996, when, together with other organisations, the institute was incorporated in the Geological Service of the Slovak Republic renamed, on 1 May 2000 based on the decision of the Minister of the Environment of the SR into the Dionýz Štúr State Geological Institute. |
