The implementation of the principle of sustainable development in individual spheres of human activities and improvement of the environment are classed among the priorities of the Programme Declaration of the Slovak Government. Directly connected with this is the improvement of the care of environment in order to achieve the same level as is in EU countries. In relation to these priorities and to the Association Agreement the Council of the Slovak Government for the Sustainable Development started its activity in 1999. The National Strategy of Sustainable Development is being prepared in co-operation with UNDP. In December 1999, the Government of the SR approved the National Environmental Action Program of the SR (NEAP II). The Minister of the Environment enumerates in his article many other strategic documents, programmes, laws, events and various measures taken to improve the environmental situation in the Slovak Republic.
