Waste problems in Japan

Problems concerning waste treatment and handling in the Tokyo region increase. Tokyo is considered the worldc s capital of dioxins. Up to 70% of worldc s incinerators are on the territory of Japan. The programme ”Zero Production of Emissions” includes a radical approach to the elimination of emissions production and stresses the importance of raw materials and biomass waste treatment. The Japanese government adopted the Act on household electric appliances recycling, which forces producers and consumers to pay extra fees for household electric appliances disposal. According to the regulation concerning the ban on illegal disposal of waste, industrial corporations are responsible also for the final phase of treatment of waste originating from their own products. Another act governs the handling of organic waste originating in kitchens. The biggest problem of Japan is still the consumer. People are aware of environmental problems, however they do not behave accordingly.
