The article points out to the importance of spatial planning instruments and their irreplaceable role in the complex approach to people and to the landscape on the level of the country and  autonomous regions administration. The objective is harmonic and well-balanced development of regions as well as the whole territory of Slovakia. The most important instruments of spatial development in Slovakia include the governmental document „The Strategy of the Spatial Development of Slovakia“ dealing with the spatial classification of regional policy of the government and evaluates the potential of regions development from the demographic, social and economic points of view and „The Area Plan of the Region“, which includes the proposal of significant development areas and the strategy of public, transport and technical utilities of the region.
