Ten years after the conference in Rio de Janeiro the representatives of 190 countries met in South African Johannesburg at the biggest event of UN history – the Summit on Sustainable Development. About 70 thousand participants were trying to find solutions of hot issues (e.g. poverty, drinking water availability for billions of people of our planet, biodiversity preservation, etc.). The Slovak governmental delegation was headed by the Minister of Environment of the Slovak Republic László Miklós. Alongside the main event he also participated in several multilateral and bilateral meetings. For example the so-called Small Summit focused on the addressing of problems of the Danube – Carpathian region. The ambitions of the summit were fulfilled during the last meeting day when the delegates agreed on the content of the political declaration and the ministers approved the action plan at the plenary session. The approved document should ensure the gradual elimination of poverty in the way not endangering the environment of our planet.
