The Waste Management Programme (WMP) is the basic strategic document for waste management. It has been developed on the national, regional and district level as well as on the municipal level and the level of individual waste generators. In 2002, the Slovak Government approved the WMP till 2005. Subsequently WMPs for all regions, district and gradually also for individual waste producers have been developed. WMP consists of the general part (basic data and the characteristics of the up-to-date state of waste management), the obligatory part (contains the target trend in handling of specified waste types and quantities), the target part (includes the intentions for building installations for waste recovery) and the part concerning the budget. The national Waste Management Programme includes, for example: increase of waste recovery from 65% in 2000 to 70% in 2005 and reduction of waste incineration from 2% in 2000 to 1% in 2005.
