Basel Convention signed by 13 countries

The Slovak Republic has been since its origination the party to the Basel Convention. Obligations following from the membership apply to the control of hazardous waste import, export and transit, which are possible only with the consent of all involved countries. At the same time, every member state is entitled to forbid fully the import of hazardous waste to its territory. To encourage the Convention implementation the Regional Training Centre of the Basel Convention for CEE countries has been established under the supervision of the Slovak Environmental Agency. Up till now, it has organised 10 training courses on various topics. During the 6th Meeting of the Conference of Parties to the Convention, which was held in Geneva in 2002, the Strategic Plan for the Basel Convention Implementation for 2000 – 2010 has been developed, which is important from the point of view of the Convention implementation and its future objectives.
