Care for the Landscape
Caring of the landscape includes a set of activities focused on conservation, management and planning. Landscape protection in terms of the Council of Europe Landscape Convention means actions taken to preserve and maintain the significant or characteristic features of a landscape that result from its historical heritage and natural configuration or from human activity. Landscape management means an activity that, from the perspective of sustainable development, should ensure regular landscape maintenance in order to guide and harmonize changes caused by social, economic and environmental processes. Landscape planning is a purposeful activity which aim is to enhance, restore or create a landscape.
The Department of Landscape Care focuses on a complex of activities aimed at the protection, management and planning of the landscape. It processes professional, methodical, legislative documents, provides consultancy, monitoring, educational and publishing activities in the field of landscape care and rural development.
The department mainly performs the following framework activities:
- ensures the fulfilment of obligations of a professional commitments arising for the Slovak Republic from the Council of Europe Landscape Convention,
- appreciates activities aimed at high-quality and sustainable management of the country through the Slovak Republic Landscape Award,
- monitors current trends, documents and activities in the field of landscape care, rural environment, green infrastructure and adaptation to climate change,
- administers the Village Renewal Program, communicates with subsidy recipients and monitors implementation of village development at the national level,
- through the Village of the Year Award, it verifies the success of the rural care development, participates in international cooperation within the framework of the European Association for Rural Development and Village Renewal (ARGE) and the European Village Renewal Award competition,
- carries out activities related to the fulfilment of the Framework Convention on the Protection and Sustainable Development of the Carpathians (Carpathian Convention) and the Convention on Biological Diversity,
- organizes professional events, provides educational and promotional activities in the field of rural development and landscape care with regional, national and international impact.
